Chhaava is a 2025 historical action film in Hindi. The film is based on the life of Sambhaji Maharaj, who was the second ruler of the Maratha Empire, and is essayed by Vicky Kaushal. Chhaava is an adaptation of Shivaji Sawant's Marathi novel and is directed by Laxman Utekar. Directed by Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films, it also stars Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna.
Plot
The film starts with the demise of Shivaji, when Sambhaji, his son, assumes command of the Maratha resistance movement. Sambhaji makes a daring raid into the Mughal lands and captures the treasure at Burhanpur. In a surprising turn of events, he finds himself in a fatal battle and even a lion inside a secret room. The movie shows his victory over the Mughal commander Khan Zamaan and his fearless disobedience towards Emperor Aurangzeb. By means of hideous tortures and personal treasons, Sambhaji remains resolute to fight for Swaraj and lays the path for the coming years in the Maratha Empire.
Cast
The film stars Vicky Kaushal as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Yesubai Bhonsale, portrayed by Rashmika Mandanna, is a staunch believer in Sambhaji thick and thin. Powerful Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb is essayed by Akshaye Khanna. Zinat-un-Nissa Begum is acted by Diana Penty, and Prince Muhammad Akbar by Neil Bhoopalam. The cast brings gravity to this historical epic, bringing out the bravery and the vulnerability of the characters.
Review
Mixed reviews from critics have been accorded to Chhaava. It's praised by some due to Vicky Kaushal's strong performances and the tense action sequences of the movie. Others condemn it as a historically inaccurate movie with an overhyped plot. Some of the reviews mention that although the movie offers stunning visuals and A.R. Rahman's evocative music, its narrative sometimes gets muddled. The movie is, overall, considered a brave attempt at depicting history, even though it fails to impress in all places. Critics opine that the movie could have better balanced its political and emotional themes.
