OTT Releases this Week: Apr 21-27 - Empuraan, Jewel Thief, Veera Dheera Sooran & MAD²

With the last week of April here, Indian OTT platforms are filled with fresh content. From adrenaline-pumping action to off-the-wall comedies and nostalgia-driven dramas, there's something for every kind of cinephile. Leading the OTT release Mohanlal's Empuraan (Malayalam) followed by action films in Hindi, Telugu and Tamil.

Here is a list of the largest OTT releases to stream this week.

Empuraan

Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, Empuraan is the highly anticipated sequel to Lucifer (2019) and further explores the dark world of Khureshi Ab'raam, played by the ever-suave Mohanlal. The film has made headlines not only for its adrenaline-pumping action and edge-of-the-seat political drama, but also for its bold political nuances, including nods to real-life events like the Gujarat riots.

Prithviraj returns as Zayed Masood, and Tovino Thomas is the young and troubled Jathin Ramdas. Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins

Directed by Kookie Gulati and produced by Siddharth Anand, this glossy thriller features Saif Ali Khan as a suave conman who is commissioned to pilfer the priceless 'African Red Sun' gem. Jaideep Ahlawat is the menacing villain, while Kunal Kapoor and Nikita Dutta round out the cast. Filmed in exotic locales—Mumbai, Istanbul, and Budapest—the movie assures high-voltage action with sleek visuals.

Race and War enthusiasts will be on home turf, thanks to Anand's pedal-to-the-metal direction and Saif's return to an action-hero role. It's a masala entertainer, full of twists, explosions, and even some self-aware humor that takes potshots at Saif's off-screen persona. Deserves a place in your weekend watchlist for sure.

Veera Dheera Sooran: Part 2

Vikram is back with a bang in this raw and gritty Tamil action thriller from S.U. Arun Kumar. Though a sequel, it's a standalone story that's about Kaali, a man who has to fight to protect his family from merciless enemies. The movie blends revenge, sentiment, and adrenaline-pumping action sequences in a gripping survival drama.

Joining Vikram are S.J. Suryah, Suraj Venjaramoodu, and Dushara Vijayan in this movie. It's filled with punch dialogues, intense confrontations, and a highlight climax that critics have applauded. Having raked in more than ₹26 crore at the box office, this one's a safe option for lovers of intense action movies.

Mad Square (MAD²)

A wild ride of comedy, chaos, and crime, Mad Square is the sequel to the sleeper hit Mad (2023). Directed by Kalyan Shankar, the film is back with the gang in another side-splitting adventure of stolen necklaces, police disguises, and unexpected CBI twists. Imagine Hangover meets Happy Days with a hot Telugu twist.

Featuring Narne Nithiin, Sangeeth Shobhan, Ram Nitin, and Priyanka Jawalkar, the film is based in Goa and features everything from pub fights to mental hospitals. Excepting mixed reviews, it is wild entertainment for someone in the mood for something light-hearted, youthful, and unpredictable.

Extra Decent (ED)

Extra Decent is a 2024 Malayalam dark comedy thriller directed by Aamir Pallikkal, featuring Suraj Venjaramoodu in a layered role. The film follows Binu, a man scarred by the traumatic death of his elder brother, as his life spirals into chaos. The narrative blends dark humour with family drama and emotional depth, portraying the consequences of a toxic childhood. With strong performances and a gripping plot, the film has gained positive reviews, especially for Suraj’s portrayal of the troubled yet compelling Binu.



Supported by talented actors like Grace Antony, Shyam Mohan, Sudheer Karamana, and Vinaya Prasad, the film captures the emotional turbulence within a fractured family. Technical contributions from Sharon Srinivas, Ankit Menon, and Sreejith Sarang enhance its moody and intense atmosphere. Critics have appreciated the film’s raw handling of trauma and its smart mix of comedy and suspense.

Kummattikali

Set against the colourful backdrop of the coastal Kummattikali festival, the film follows four spirited youngsters—Dennis, Luka, Bhairavan, and Ameer—known as the "Kummati Boys." Their carefree lives take a dramatic turn when they become entangled in a serious crime. 

With Madhav Suresh, Mithun Prakash, Rashik Ajmal, and Dhananjay in lead roles, the film boasts a strong ensemble cast including Lena, Mime Gopi, and Major Ravi. It promises a gripping mix of youthful energy, tradition, and suspense.
